Saline or silicone breast implants: which is best for you?

Breast ImplantsWhen planning your breast augmentation, there are many things to consider — and one of the most important decisions is the TYPE of breast implants you’d like to have.

It’s important to understand the pros and cons associated with both saline and silicone implants, then to think about what you really want from your breast augmentation. Both saline and silicone breast implants have a silicone outer shell, and they can vary in size, shell thickness and shape.

Saline breast implants

Saline implants are filled with salt water, which is a harmless natural liquid. They tend to feel firmer than natural breast tissue.

Advantages to saline breast implants:

•    They can be filled by a valve during breast augmentation surgery, making the incision much shorter than silicone breast implants.
•    The volume of fill can be adjusted during surgery.
•    If a rupture occurs, the body absorbs the saline content safely.

Disadvantages:

•    They can feel firmer than other types of breast implants.
•    They have a higher risk of leakage and deflation.
•    There is a higher risk of visible folds and ripples.
•    Additional surgery may be needed if the implants deflate.
•    They have a limited effective lifespan.
•    Causes of fungal growth inside saline implants have been reported.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone implants contain a gel, rather than a liquid, and are designed to mimic the consistency of human fat.

Advantages to silicone breast implants:

•    They feel more natural than saline implants.
•    The new generation of silicone gel is more cohesive, which reduces the risk of dispersal if the implant ruptures.
•    They maintain a better shape than saline breast implants.
•    There’s no concrete evidence that silicone gel poses serious, long term health problems.

Disadvantages:

•    They require longer incisions, especially for larger breast implants.
•    If the implant ruptures, you may not notice for a number of years.
